Many more countries in the world, such as South Korea, are trying to keep Google and five other big technology companies under control. The biggest task in this regard falls to the relevant institutions that regulate the competition. South Korea’s regulator, the Korean Fair Trade Commission (KFTC), announced in a statement that Google was fined for preventing competition.

Google penalized for blocking competition

The Korean Fair Trade Commission said in a statement that Google has blocked the streaming of mobile video games on competing platforms. KFTC fined Google’s parent company Alphabet 42.1 billion won or $32 million for this reason. KFTC cites that Google has increased its market dominance by requiring video game makers to only publish their games on Google Play, hurting the revenue and value of the local app market One Store as a platform. Additionally, Google allegedly made these pressure applications between June 2016 and April 2018.

Google, on the other hand, says that it will wait for the final decision of the KFTC to evaluate the next action plan and will act accordingly. A Google spokesperson states that Google invests heavily in developers and respects but disagrees with the KFTC’s conclusions. Meanwhile, in 2021, the KFTC fined Google $177 million for blocking customized versions of the Android operating system.
