Huawei Patents An Airbag That Activates Based on Driver’s Position

Have you ever wondered what would happen if your airbag didn’t deploy properly in a car accident? Or worse yet, have you ever wondered if your airbag inflates more strongly than it should and does more harm than good?

Huawei has also developed a solution for this situation. The Chinese tech giant has recently filed a patent for a new airbag control system that can adapt to the sitting position of the driver and passengers.

What’s wrong with existing airbags?

Airbags are designed to protect vehicle occupants from serious injury in the event of a collision. However, this system, which works by sensing the impact and inflating rapidly to cushion the impact, is not perfect. For example, some of them may malfunction or be opened incorrectly, opening insufficiently or opening too quickly, causing more harm than good.

For example, if the passenger is leaning forward or to the side, the airbag may not adequately protect their head or chest. Conversely, if the passenger is lying down or sitting too close to the instrument panel, the airbag could hit him with too much force and cause injury.

How does Huawei’s new technology solve this problem?

Huawei’s new patent takes a smarter way to control airbag deployment. The patent includes an airbag control system that includes a sensing device and a controller. This sensing device can detect information about the passenger’s sitting posture, such as the angle between the seat and the seat cushion, and the seat coordinates.

The controller then calculates the optimum deployment of the airbag based on this information. For example, if the passenger is sitting upright, the airbag deploys to full size, or if the passenger is leaning forward, the airbag deploys to a smaller size or a different shape. In this way, the airbag provides customized protection for different postures.
