Increasing sanctions against Chinese companies
According to newly shared reports, the Portuguese Cyber Security Council said products from Chinese suppliers pose a “high risk” to the country’s wireless network security. Huawei is not specifically mentioned in the report. However, Bloomberg reported that the Portuguese government is restricting the supply of 5G equipment from suppliers outside the European Union or countries that are not members of NATO or OCED.
In a statement on the subject, a Huawei spokesperson said, “Over the past two decades, Huawei has worked with Portuguese operators to build wireless networks and provide quality services that connect millions of people. We will continue to comply with all applicable laws and regulations and serve Portuguese customers and partners who trust our products and services. ” In addition, the authorized person states that no information about the company has been shared.
According to the Financial Times, Portugal has been one of the countries that received the most Chinese investment per capita in recent years. So much so that Altice Portugal, one of the country’s largest wireless carriers, signed a big deal in 2018 to use Huawei’s 5G equipment. If the new decision is approved, we can say that Portugal will soon join a number of European countries, including Canada and Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which have imposed restrictions on Huawei and Chinese equipment.
