Huawei Mate 70 Series and Kirin 9100 Processor
Last week, some information about the camera design of the highly anticipated Huawei Mate 70 series emerged. One of the most striking features of this new phone series is the use of the Kirin 9100 processor. This processor is produced by the Chinese chip manufacturing company SMIC and stands out with its 6nm production process. Kirin 9100 seems to have taken a step forward in terms of technology, considering that its predecessor, the Kirin 9000S, was produced on the 7nm process.
However, with the spread of 3nm and 4nm manufacturing processes in the technology world, Kirin 9100 falls behind these new standards. Advanced manufacturing processes have the potential to deliver less energy consumption and higher performance. Therefore, the Kirin 9100’s performance may be somewhat limited compared to today’s flagship phones.
Telegram user @spektykles shared an image showing the hardware structure of the Kirin 9100 processor. This image shows that the new processor will use ARM’s Cortex-X CPU core. This will replace HiSilicon’s Taishan large and medium cores used in previous versions of Kirin processors. Kirin 9100 will consist of 8 cores in total and these cores will run at different speeds.
Core Structure of Kirin 9100 Processor
- 1 Cortex-X1 core will operate at 2.67 GHz.
- 3 Cortex-A78 cores will run at 2.32 GHz.
- 4 Cortex-A55 cores will run at 2.02 GHz.
This structure will allow Kirin 9100 to work more efficiently in multitasking and applications requiring high performance. Although Mali-TBEX is listed as the graphics processing unit (GPU), Huawei’s own designed Maleoon GPU will probably be used. Based on the second image, it is thought that the Maleoon 910 may have the same graphics processor used in the previous models.
US Sanctions and Huawei’s Challenges
However, US sanctions prevent Huawei from using newer Cortex designs and more advanced semiconductor manufacturing technologies. This seriously affects Huawei’s ability to compete in the international market. Especially the Mate 70 series runs the risk of falling far behind compared to today’s flagship phones in terms of performance due to these restrictions.
In conclusion, although the Huawei Mate 70 series and its Kirin 9100 processor offer some innovative features, it seems difficult to gain a competitive advantage, given the current market conditions and technological advancements. While users are eagerly awaiting the performance and features of this new series, the difficulties faced by Huawei should also be taken into consideration.
