Huawei is considered by many to be a consumer electronics manufacturer that has recently been struggling due to its inability to supply advanced chipsets due to US sanctions. But the same Huawei is a huge telecommunications giant and apparently it is working on a very interesting project. Recently, the company shared some results showing that it is working on a satellite internet service that is very similar to SpaceX’s Starlink.

Huawei tested a satellite internet service in low Earth orbit, similar to Starlink, and shared the details of this test on Weibo. One of the presentation slides shared revealed that download speeds of up to 660 Mbps were achieved during this test.

Wang Jun, chief scientific officer of Huawei’s 6G wireless laboratory, shared these results at the Aerospace Information Industry International Ecosystem Event in Chongqing, China. It is not a big surprise that Huawei is working in this field, as the company’s latest high-end phone, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro, includes the feature of connecting to fixed satellites.

Huawei did not disclose which satellites were used to test this internet service. Recently, China began launching its own satellites into low Earth orbit. It may take some time for a commercial service similar to Starlink to be available, but it is now clear that Huawei is seriously interested in this possibility.

The company has a huge advantage that other companies in this industry, such as SpaceX, do not have. Even though it’s effectively banned in many western countries, the company sells a lot of phones that allow Huawei to broadcast high-speed satellite internet to even remote areas.
