An international space exploration team has teamed up to test what can happen in the face of a massive asteroid impact on Earth. The results of this organization, which took place last year, were published recently. Steps to be taken according to asteroid impact scenarios are laid out in this publication.

Asteroid impact scenarios discussed

To simulate the threat, participants considered the asteroid Apophis. This asteroid with a diameter of 335 meters is expected to approach Earth in 2029 and 2068. This meteorite is unlikely to hit the earth. However, in order to be prepared for all kinds of bad scenarios, scientists discussed the possibility of the asteroid hitting the earth in various simulations.

NASA’s Near-Earth Object Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) played a large role in these studies, collecting information on the size and shape of the asteroid. These calculations are essential for estimating how much damage the crash will cause.

Using the data here, simulations of possible collisions on Earth are created. In this way, it is tried to calculate how much damage an asteroid can do if it hits the Earth. With this study, the ways to be followed by the aid teams in the event of such a disaster are determined.

Michael Kelley, a PDCO program scientist within NASA’s Planetary Science Division, said:

It was impressive to see the defense community come together during Apophis’ latest approach to our planet. During a pandemic, even when many of its participants had to work remotely, we were able to identify, track and learn more about a potential hazard with great efficiency. The exercise was a great success.
