AAA tested four vehicles equipped with the automatic braking system and found that the system was unable to prevent the most common types of crashes at average speeds. The automatic braking system is very successful in preventing rear-end collisions at low speeds, but when it goes above the average speed, the system cannot achieve the same success. Recent research commissioned by the American Automobile Association says so.
From September 2022, all vehicles to be sold in the United States are required to have an automatic braking system. This system controls the environment with the help of front cameras and automatically activates the brakes when there is a possibility of a sudden accident. It was thought that the automatic braking system could prevent 28,000 accidents and 12,000 injuries by 2025.
Using four common tools, it was tested to see how the automatic braking system has progressed since it was first introduced in production vehicles nearly 20 years ago. The results obtained were not that good.
In testing, the system proved to be useful in rear-end collisions, but not so well in two common crash scenarios: Junction encounters and left turns. These types of accidents account for about 40 percent of the accidents that occurred between 2016 and 2020. The automatic braking system is almost useless in such accidents. Moreover, it is stated that it does not even warn the driver to slow down.
This isn’t the first time the American auto administration has highlighted the lack of automatic braking and other driver assistance features. A 2019 study by the group also found that auto-braking cars were pretty bad at avoiding crashing into fake pedestrians at speeds of 32 mph.
