The new feature, developed according to the statements made by Mark Zuckerberg, will create a new layer of security for chats backed up on Google Drive or iCloud. With this optional feature, users will be able to encrypt the chats they back up outside of WhatsApp servers. In this way, both Google and Apple will be unable to access users’ messages. According to Zuckerberg, no other messaging app in the world offers users such a comprehensive layer of security. However, Zuckerberg said that this feature may not be available to all users at the same time. End-to-end encryption for chat backups will be delivered to users in stages. How are WhatsApp backups end-to-end encrypted?
- Step #1: Enter the settings menu.
- Step #2: Tap “Chats” then “Chat Backup”.
- Step #3: Tap the “End-to-End Encrypted Backup” option.
- Step #4: Tap “Continue” and create password.
- Step #5: After tapping “Done” wait for the backups to be end-to-end encrypted.
How to remove end-to-end encryption on Whatsapp chat backups?
- Step #1: Enter the settings menu.
- Step #2: Tap “Chats” then “Chat Backup”.
- Step #3: Tap “End-to-End Encrypted Backup”.
- Step #4: After tapping “Close”, enter the password you created and tap “Close” again.
Note: While the new feature of WhatsApp is useful, keep in mind that if you forget the password you will create for encryption, you will never be able to access the chat backup again.
