Android offers many different ways to personalize your phone. This customizability extends to your default app for common tasks like making calls and messaging. You can choose to use a web browser of your choice or replace Google Assistant with Alexa. It only takes a few steps to download the app you want and set it as default.
The types of apps you can set new defaults for include web browser, caller ID and spam blocker, digital assistant, Home app (aka launcher), phone, SMS (text message).
But how do you set default apps on an Android phone? Here’s what you need to do on your Android phone, including the Google Pixel 6…
How to set the default app on Android?
- Go to Play Store and download the new app you want to set as default.
-
Go to Settings > Apps and tap Default apps under “General”. This may not be exactly the same for different brand devices. For example, on a Samsung phone, you still need to select Apps and tap the Choose default apps option above.
-
Select the application you want to change. On the next menu screen, you will see the current default app along with any other apps you have downloaded.
-
Select the application you want to use as default.
Some of the options, such as changing the default home screen app, can completely change the way you use the phone.
Selecting the app to open links on Android
You can also change the way your phone opens links. For example, you can have Google Play Store links open in the app store instead of in a web browser, and vice versa. You can see which installed apps are set to open certain links and choose whether the system should do this automatically or ask you every time you click on one of those links.
-
From the default app menu screen, tap Open links at the bottom.
-
Under Installed applications, select the application whose behavior you want to change. Tap
-
Open supported links.
-
On some devices, you may have additional options for the phone to ask if it should open links or automatically open them in the app without prompting.
