Space Zoom, which is a very useful feature that Samsung introduced last year and on which people shoot many funny and viral videos, automatically increases the quality of the low-quality space photos you take.
A Reddit user conducted a small experiment to learn how this technology, which Samsung recently released, works. Thus, he revealed the deception of the Space Zoom feature, which the company markets by saying that it works with camera lenses. But seeing this and blaming the company wouldn’t be very consistent.
A study by a Reddit user revealing that Samsung is mismarketing its ‘Space Zoom’ technology
Reddit user u/ibreakphotos downloaded this high resolution image and applied ‘Gaussian Blur’ from the Filter tab in Photoshop. Thus, all the defining details of the Moon photo have disappeared.
This means that the photo is unrecoverable, the information is not there, it is digitally blurred. Later, this friend opened this photo to full screen on his computer monitor, turned off the lights of the room, and went to the far end of the room and photographed the Moon from his Samsung Galaxy device, as in the GIF below.
The result, as you can see, is that the Moon, of which no details are known, comes into existence out of nothing.
When you look at it, the working logic of the Space Zoom feature is similar to the working logic of artificial intelligence supported effects such as the bokeh effect.
You can also see how the feature works on Samsung’s own page. The problem here is that the company is marketing as if it has sensors that can zoom at the space level, rather than lying. The artificial intelligence supported camera improves the moon photo you will take and while doing this, it uses artificial intelligence to overcome problems such as brightness and focus problems.
We can say that this is the reason why there is a perception that he took the Moon standing there and put another one in its place. On the other hand, we can say that Samsung is neither the first nor the only company to do this. At high zoom values, almost every company activates artificial intelligence when the optical zoom limit is exceeded in order to prevent quality loss.
Face enhancements, filters, light corrections, bokeh effects, and many other different features work in a similar way. But Space Zoom has become such an agenda because it creates the perception that it brings the Moon to your feet. This is the background of Samsung’s Moon mode feature.
