How Long Does the BioNTech Vaccine Lose Its Effect?

A study conducted in the USA revealed when the antibody level of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine dropped. The experts found that the number of antibodies in the blood samples they examined dropped 10 times 7 months after the second dose. Scientists see the third dose of vaccine as a necessity.

Vaccines, which are the number one weapon in the fight against coronavirus, unfortunately did not make the pandemic come to an end. Because the majority of people who reject the vaccine and prefer to believe in conspiracy theories prevented the acquisition of social immunity worldwide. As such, people who preferred to be vaccinated had the opportunity to protect their loved ones only with themselves.

Scientists working at Stanford University and Emory University, which are serving in the USA, conducted a large-scale study in which they followed the antibody rate in the body of people who were vaccinated. According to this research, the COVID-19 immunity of people who receive the mRNA-based Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine begins to decline 6 months after the completion of the process. By the 7th month, the amount of antibodies in the body decreases to a very low level.

10 times decrease

The scientists took two different blood samples from 46 adult individuals for the study in question. The first of these blood samples was taken immediately after the second dose of vaccine, and the second was taken 6 months later. The experts, who counted antibodies between the two samples, determined that there was a decrease in the number of antibodies as time passed. It attracted attention due to the fact that this decrease was as high as 10 times. “Our study showed that the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine provides high levels of antibody formation, but this level decreases approximately 10 times up to 7 months,” the experts said.

According to the research, people who have received two doses of mRNA-based coronavirus vaccine must also receive the third dose of the vaccine in order to increase the amount of antibodies. The research also reveals the time of the third dose. According to US scientists, the third dose of vaccine, which will be administered 6-7 months after the second dose, will strengthen immunity.
