Living in space has always been a curious subject. Astronauts who have spent a long time on the International Space Station may be the most experienced people in this regard. German astronaut Matthias Maurer also answered some questions by sharing his six-month period on the ISS. When asked about his personal highlights from the mission, Maurer described his spacewalk and his view of Earth as he went into orbit on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The German astronaut described the experience as “like entering a new world.”
Maurer said he and other crew members took more than 120,000 photos during the six-month Expedition 66 mission. Stating that there are many eye-catching photographs, the German astronaut said that he could then bring together the best of these photographs and look at them again.
Maurer also described the landing with Crew Dragon off the Florida coast in May 2022 as “fantastic”. Maurer described those moments with these words:
After entering the atmosphere, I saw all the colored light outside the capsule and then felt the G-force. The parachutes opened, everything was spinning.
This was the moment I was most worried about. How would I react to these turns when the parachutes opened? Will I get seasick or dizzy, and will I vomit afterwards? But when we landed I was so glad everything went well and I felt good, there was so much enthusiasm.
Commenting on life on Earth, Maurer stated that he felt the gravity on his head and neck after returning. However, he says that despite these pains, returning to familiar world conditions such as “the food being left on his plate” makes him feel good.
The astronaut also talked about how the journey has changed him and how valuable it is to do science work on the ISS. Maurer also stated that if he had another chance to go into space, he would be much better prepared and would do better research to understand the world.
