Notches, which emerged to increase the screen / body ratio and opened a new era in smartphone production, often come up with complaints from users. Although smartphones offer more screen space thanks to these notches, users are still not satisfied with the fact that there is a projection that enters the screen.
In this regard, manufacturers also show their efforts by producing different notch designs. We even saw that this notch was completely eliminated on some phones, while the front camera was hidden under the screen. Apple, on the other hand, was behind in this design approach, and the design it showed with the iPhone X was highly criticized. It showed the notch design, which could be a new standard in the iPhone 14 Pro models, which it introduced on September 7th.
It all started with the introduction of the iPhone X:
This model, which was introduced at the same event as the iPhone 8 but met with users at different times, was Apple’s first move against its rivals, which removed the physical keys and enlarged the screen area. In this context, it followed the same design against its rivals, which fit elements such as the camera and speaker into a ledge that enters the screen.
But there were also places to differ. Because removing the iconic iPhone key meant getting rid of Touch ID, which users have been accustomed to for years. Taking something users liked and giving them a notch that they would find ugly wouldn’t do much for the company either.
This is where new sensors come into play:
Apple made the notch that it placed on the iPhone X models functional by making it more than a camera slot. In this context, a camera, infrared camera, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, speaker, microphone and dot projector are placed here. With the contribution of sensors and new processor, Face ID, which is much more secure than Touch ID, came to devices.

After the iPhone X, we also saw systems such as under-screen cameras. So what did Apple do during this time?
On the iPhone 11, we can say that this notch has widened to an inconspicuous extent. Of course, since the screen and case size of each model changes even with minor changes, it should be noted that the notch is made accordingly. However, it is worth saying that Face ID has accelerated by 30 percent with the innovations that have come.

But that’s the price we have to pay to get a pretty good security system like Face ID. On the other hand, Face ID is not a feature that everyone uses. Some people use those passwords on their phones because they find their passwords more secure. For this reason, Apple is investing more in the most important part, namely performance.
While doing this, it does not skip the notch issue:
On the iPhone 12, we did not see much difference in terms of notch. It just got smaller to fit the new screen. On the iPhone 13, a hint at the notch welcomed us for future moves. Maybe you didn’t realize until you read this article, but the handset of the iPhone 13 is placed on the top of the case. In this way, both the notch shrank by 20 percent and the way for future improvements was opened.
