The famous Nürburgring circuit in Germany, nicknamed the Green Hell, is one of the most important testing grounds for automakers. The lap times achieved at this track have become a show of strength for the automotive industry. Recently, the Nürburgring track has been moved to a different location, especially for front-wheel drive vehicles. Automakers have been competing for a long time to hold this track record.
Honda sets record at Nurburgring in lightweight Civic Type RS
Honda, one of the most ambitious brands for the Nürburgring front wheel drive lap record, managed to take the record from Renault with the overhauled Civic Type R model. The car, called ‘Honda Civic Type R S’, managed to lap the famous track in 7 minutes and 44,881 seconds. Renault held the Nürburgring record with a time of 7 minutes 45,389 seconds, which he last achieved in 2019 with the Megane RS Trophy-R.
With the lap time it reached, the Honda Civic Type R proved its claim on the Nürburgring, which is a very difficult track for cars with its length of 20.8 kilometers and more than 150 corners. The Japanese manufacturer is making a series of changes to the standard Civic Type R to capture the Nürburgring record.
The car, which has a 2.0-liter KA coded engine that can produce 330 horsepower, gets its share of Honda’s lightening work. Saying goodbye to the navigation system, air conditioner, parking sensors, the side mirrors have also lost all their electronic functions. At the same time, Honda, which disables the dimming feature in the rear view mirror, also removes the illumination light in the sun visor. This model, which was produced completely with a track focus, seems to have achieved its desire as a result of the work done.
Honda did not disclose how much weight the Civic Type RS model, which got rid of all its extra weight, lost. However, it can be said that the model has a weight advantage of about 50 kilograms with the elimination of electronic parts. It is stated that no changes have been made to the engine and suspension of the vehicle.
With this lap time, the Honda Civic Type RS manages to leave many powerful cars behind. The Japanese manufacturer will sell its record-breaking vehicle in certain markets in Europe.
