Intel, one of the leading names in the processor market, may shelve the Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9 naming scheme that has been used for many years. In a brief statement, Bernard Fernandes, Global Communications Director at Intel Corporation, confirmed rumors about the product name change.

Intel bids farewell to its Core i series

For those who don’t know, in the report that has emerged in the past weeks, it has been discovered that Intel is working on a new processor called Core Ultra 5 1003H. Therefore, we started to hear many rumors pointing to a name change, especially on the mobile platform. Now Intel has clarified these claims.

In a statement on the subject, the CPU giant said, “Yes, we are making brand changes as we are at a crossroads in our customer roadmap as we prepare for the imminent launch of our Meteor Lake processors. We will provide more details on these exciting changes in the coming weeks!”

It is not yet clear which platforms the product name change will apply to. However, the new statement confirms that the upcoming Meteor Lake or new generation Intel Core processors may appear with the names “Core Ultra 3 / 5 / 7 / 9”.

The Intel Core Mobile H-series brand change will be as follows:

  • Core i9 1XX00H → Core (Ultra) 9 1X0XH
  • Core i7 1XX00H → Core (Ultra) 7 1X0XH
  • Core i5 1XX00H → Core (Ultra) 5 1X0XH
  • Core i3 1XX00H → Core (Ultra) 3 1X0XH

In addition, Intel is preparing to refresh the Raptor Lake series, which was introduced last October, later this year. Therefore, we can see that the new name scheme is also used in Raptor Lake Refresh processors. However, the source of the leak states that the name “Ultra” may be optional and only apply to newer CPUs, not refurbished parts.
