No one wants to find an insect in their home, and when they find it, they want to get rid of the insect. It is everyone’s dream not to get up from our place and to remove the insect without seeing it if possible. These dreams are returning, thanks to a model developed by Ildar Rakhmatulin of Heriot-Watt University.
In an article published last week in the journal Oriental Insects, Rakhmatulin and his colleagues targeted domestic cockroaches in their study using machine vision, laser and machine learning. The mini laser turret in the study can detect and eliminate cockroaches up to 1.2 meters away.
Fighting insects with lasers
In fact, this study is a continuation of previous studies. In a previous study using Raspberry Pi and laser, mosquitoes were hunted in the air. In this study, a computer that can see insects more accurately is preferred. In his statement, Rakhmatulin states that he uses Jetson Nano to find insects more accurately with deep learning.
Location of cockroaches is detected.
In the system installed, Jetson Nano detects the position of cockroaches using images from two cameras. Images from the cameras are transmitted to the galvanometer, which directs the electric current. Thus, the direction of the laser can be changed according to the target.
In the research, it was stated that this system was used at three different power levels. Due to the effect of lasers at low power level, the cockroaches escape. In this way, insects can be collected at a certain point. At higher levels, it was stated that cockroaches were effectively neutralized.
Rakhmatulin also shared the data and setup information of the system he used. Thus, other people will be able to install the system if they want. On the other hand, it is necessary to be careful when installing this system. An incorrect setting can cause undesirable results.
