Hiccups occur as a result of sudden and involuntary contraction of our diaphragm. As the diaphragm contracts, the vocal cords suddenly close and a “hic” sound is produced.
It is usually caused by indigestion problems such as eating fast or excessive food, drinking too much alcohol. Apart from physical reasons, sudden mood changes, psychological disorders such as fear and stress can also cause hiccups. But there is an important caveat to hiccups. Experts warned that hiccups that do not go away for a long time may be a sign of cancer.
Hiccups can be a sign of cancer
Physical or psychological causes can cause contraction of the diaphragm and hiccups. Among the people, there are many methods of hiccups such as holding breath, breathing rapidly, eating lemon, snorting vinegar, swallowing ice or drinking ice water, washing the face with cold water. In fact, basically, relaxing the body a little is enough for the hiccups to pass easily. However, sometimes these diaphragm contractions can last longer.
The problem begins when this period is extended. Highlighting the issue, Dr. Hussein Abdeh made an important statement saying, “The stomach is not working properly, it is bloated for no reason, and hiccups that last longer than 48 hours can be signs of esophageal cancer.”
Malignant tumors that form in the tissue that forms the inner structure of the esophagus can cause the formation of esophagus, popularly known as esophageal cancer. According to doctors, constantly eating hot, solid, unchewed food, smoking and using alcohol can cause thermal and chemical burns in the esophagus. It is said that hiccups may be a harbinger of esophageal cancer, as their causes are indirectly related to each other. Experts warn that in case of abnormal symptoms, it is necessary to consult a doctor without delay.
