Our sun had a pretty edgy period last week. Tuesday’s massive solar flare was recorded by a probe orbiting the Sun. Images taken with the Solar Orbiter mission, operated in partnership with NASA and ESA, were published by NASA. The event has been described as “the largest solar flare ever observed”.

Video showing the explosion (watch below) was created by combining images taken by Solar Orbiter and another Sun-tracking spacecraft, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. The video clearly shows how big the explosion was.

ESA said that this particular eruption spanned millions of kilometers into space, explaining that “Solar flares are large structures of entangled magnetic field lines, sometimes taking the form of curved loops, that form dense concentrations of solar plasma above the Sun’s surface.”
