Baldur’s Gate 3, the last game of the Baldur’s Gate series, the second of which was released exactly 23 years ago, is finally out of early access as of yesterday. Contrary to expectations, Baldur’s Gate 3, one of the ancestors of role-playing games, turned the balance of Steam upside down as soon as it was released and achieved a great success.
Baldur’s Gate 3 becomes the best-selling game on Steam
Baldur’s Gate 3, developed by Larian Studios, has its name written in gold letters at the top of the best-selling games list on Steam at the moment. Of course, it should be noted that this list does not always remain the same and changes. However, the real success is that the game grabbed this title right after its release.
Baldur’s Gate 3’s concurrent player count on Steam peaked at 472,136. This took a lot of the gaming community by surprise, as it is unlikely that a demanding single-player role-playing game with no in-game purchases will emerge from a sea of free-to-play games filled with in-game purchases.
Excluding Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2, which are consistently top two, makes Baldur’s Gate 3 the most played game on Steam right now.
However, among the successful debut games of 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 remains in second place. At this point, the leadership is still in the hands of Hogwarts Legacy, which reached 879,308 players instantly when it debuted in February.
In fact, the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 was so popular that there were some crashes on Steam’s servers. It should not be difficult to guess how much load Baldur’s Gate 3, a 122 GB game without a pre-load option, puts on Steam servers.
Swen Vincke, the boss of the game’s developer Larian, shared a slightly allusive post with that secret smile of success, in which he apologized to both Steam and the players for this crash.
