Researchers have created a new artificial intelligence (AI) technique that can detect plaque erosion in heart arteries, which could lead to the development of new treatments for heart disease.

This developed artificial intelligence technique uses optical coherence tomography (OCT) images to monitor arterial plaque. The finding is very important, as the breakdown of plaque can serve as the onset of a heart attack or other serious heart disease. OCT, an optical imaging technique, can be used inside blood vessels to produce 3D pictures of the coronary arteries that carry blood to the heart muscles. These images are usually accurate due to the optical filters employed for better instrument performance.
Scientists introduced the OCT technique to artificial intelligence
The OCT technique is used to detect plaque erosion. However, the volume of data produced and the difficulty in interpreting the images cause significant inter-observer variability. To solve this, the researchers introduced the OCT technique to artificial intelligence to identify plaque erosion.
The new artificial intelligence method consists of two main steps, first in which an artificial intelligence model known as a neural network analyzes the original image and two pieces of shape information to predict plaque erosion zones. This prediction is then refined by an algorithm that mimics the diagnostic knowledge of professional doctors.
“If the cholesterol plaques lining the arteries begin to erode, it can lead to a sudden decrease in blood flow to the heart, known as acute coronary syndrome, which requires immediate treatment. Our new method is helping to improve the clinical diagnosis of plaque erosion,” said Zhao Wang from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. It can help and be used to develop new treatments for patients with heart disease.” said.
