Volition, the studio behind well-known game series such as Saints Row and Red Faction, has closed its studio completely. The startling announcement was made today, with parent company Embracer Group making the decision.
Volition’s announcement, posted on its official LinkedIn page, reads: “For 30 years, the Volition team has proudly created world-class entertainment for fans around the world. We are driven by passion for our community and have always worked to deliver joy, surprise and delight.
Last June, Embracer Group announced a restructuring program to strengthen Embracer and maintain its leading position in the video game industry. As part of this program, they evaluated strategic and operational goals and made the difficult decision to close Volition.”
Founded in 1993, Volition has created many high-profile games over its 30 years in the industry. These include Red Faction in 2001, the start of the Saints Row franchise in 2006, and numerous sequels under the THQ umbrella. The studio has been under the wing of the Embracer Group since 2018.
The studio’s latest project was a complete reboot of Saints Row for consoles and PC, with a new setting, characters, and storyline aimed at modernizing the humorous action series for newer audiences. However, the game was poorly received by critics and fans. Embracer did not reveal official sales figures for the open world game, but said the game did not meet its sales expectations.
