Threads, developed by Instagram and designed to compete with X (Twitter), started testing the “hashtag” system in recent weeks. It seems that these tests must have received positive feedback, and now this system has been activated for everyone in Threads.

Hashtags came to Threads

Instagram president Adam Mosseri announced in his statement the other day that they have made small changes to hashtags, which we can call tags, available globally. Tags work a little differently than hashtags on platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). When creating a Threads post, you start a hashtag by tapping the # symbol and then typing your topic. But instead of being limited to a single word, you can type an entire sentence (with spaces!) and add special characters like emojis, according to Mosseri. However, you can only create one tag per post.

Although the usage style has changed, the purpose of tags in Threads is the same as hashtags. “If you’re posting on Threads, tags are a great way to help you connect with people interested in the topics you’re talking about,” says Mosseri. Frankly, Threads’ implementation of tags is a strong step, and the single tag limit actually makes sense. In this way, annoying spam messages are prevented. However, some time is needed to determine whether users will actually adopt the tags.

There are other changes too

Development for Threads continues uninterrupted. Users can now pin replies to their posts to the top so everyone can see them. Additionally, like on Twitter, posts can be pinned to the profile page. In recent months, after criticism, the ability to remove the Threads profile without deleting your Instagram account was introduced. By the way, it was initially said that the DM/Direct Message feature was not considered for Threads, but recently signals have been given that this feature may come in the future.
