Intel celebrates 50 years of the release of the Intel 4004, the world’s first commercially available microprocessor, which lays the foundation for chips used in computers and phones, as well as for more advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT). According to Intel, the 4004 was a very important step. Because he proved that complex integrated circuits can be built on a nail-sized chip.

Pat Gelsinger, Intel CEO, said of the 4004: “This year is the 50th anniversary of the 4004 chip. Think of how much we’ve accomplished in the past half century. It’s a holy moment for technology. That’s what makes the computer really successful.”

The Story of Intel 4004

The Intel 4004 was developed by Intel engineers Federico Faggin, Ted Hoff, and Stan Mazor. Two years before the chip was introduced in November 1971, Nippon Calculated Machine Corporation turned to Intel to design some integrated circuits for the Busicom 141-PF, an engineering prototype calculator it was working on. Twelve chips were originally planned, but eventually this was reduced to four, including the Intel 4004.
