Opera announced that Aria, the AI tool it integrated into its browser, has exceeded one million users since its release. The company released the AI tool in May and made it available to all Android users in June.
For Aria, Opera teamed up with OpenAI to take advantage of GPT technology instead of using a built-in language model. As a reminder, GPT is the model used by ChatGPT and is largely seen as the language model that started the productive AI revolution.
Commenting on the increasing use of Aria, Lin Song, co-CEO of Opera, said in a statement, “As encouraging as Aria’s initial adoption was, we are equally pleased with the quality of users’ early interactions with the AI tool. We see that the total time spent is increasing with the increasing number of searches and page views per session,” he said, adding: “Although it’s still early days, I’m very excited that our users love the Aria experience as much as we do. I look forward to more of our users trying Aria for themselves as we upgrade our entire desktop user base to Opera One and bring our native browser AI to Opera GX and Opera for iOS soon, making it available on all major platforms.”
Although Aria uses the GPT language model, it has several advantages over ChatGPT. The first is that it offers a more native experience than the ChatGPT website, especially on Android, as it’s built right into the browser. It can also pull information from the web to improve the results it provides to you.
Although Opera doesn’t have as much market share as other browsers, it can be said that the company’s efforts to compete with its peers such as Microsoft and Bing Chat are well underway.
