Jon Peddie Research reports that growth in the global PC-based graphics processing unit (GPU) market reached 75.5 million units in Q3 2022, with shipments of PC CPUs decreasing by 19 percent year-over-year. Overall, GPUs will have a CAGR of 2.8 percent over 2022-2026, reaching an installed base of 3,138 million units by the end of the forecast period. In the next five years, the penetration of discrete GPUs (dGPUs) in PC will increase to 26 percent.

Worst result since 2009

On the other hand, year-over-year total GPU shipments, including all platforms and all GPU types, fell by a record 25.1%. Desktop graphics cards fell 15.43 percent, while laptop GPUs fell 30 percent. These numbers represent the biggest drop since the recession in 2009.

As you can see in the table below, AMD’s total market share decreased by 8.5 percent from quarter to quarter. Similarly, Nvidia experienced a decrease of 1.87 percent. Intel, on the other hand, increased its market share by 10.3 percent. Overall GPU unit shipments were down 10.3 percent from last quarter. During that time, AMD shipments were down 47.6 percent, while Nvidia’s shipments were down 19.7 percent. Intel’s shipments rose 4.7 percent.

Nearly all companies in the PC segment are in decline, and they often cite similar reasons: the cessation of crypto mining, the constant shutdowns of production facilities due to China’s zero-tolerance rules, US sanctions, and the decline in post-COVID purchases. Analysts expect the decline to continue in the fourth quarter.
