It has been known for some time that Google is working on a service that will rival ChatGPT. And now it looks like Google is ready to take the stage with its own chatbot.

The company has officially announced Bard, which it describes as an “experimental speech AI service.” Bard will be powered by the Google Language Model (LaMDA) and a select group of testers will be able to try it out before it becomes publicly available in the coming weeks.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai said of Bard: “Bard aims to combine the vast knowledge of the world with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our great language models. It leverages information from the web to provide new, high-quality answers.”

Google will initially release the Bard as a lightweight model version of LaMDA. This model requires much less computing power, which will allow Google to reach more users than the full model. Thus, it is thought that more users can provide feedback.

Pichai explains how Bard will transform our internet experience: “One of the most exciting opportunities is how AI can deepen our understanding of information and transform it into useful knowledge more efficiently. AI makes it easy for people to get to the core of what they’re looking for and get things done. People often ask, “How many keys does a piano have?” They consider turning to Google for quick factual answers, such as But more and more people are turning to Google for deeper information. For example, “Is it easier to learn piano or guitar, and how much practice does each take?” Learning about a topic like this can take a lot of effort to understand what you really need to know, and people often want to explore a wide variety of ideas or perspectives. That’s what Bard will offer.”

In the near future, Google will introduce AI-powered features in Search to provide understandable answers to complex queries like this. Pichai hasn’t shared a specific release schedule other than “coming soon,” but the new AI features in Search will look like this:
