Making eSIM migrations easier on Android phones
Android phones today require disabling the eSIM profile on the old device for eSIM transfer. This transfer process may also require operator support to reactivate the eSIM.
iPhones, on the other hand, have a built-in Quick Transfer feature that allows users to transfer physical or eSIMs from their old iPhone to a new model without the need for carrier support. It looks like Google will follow in Apple’s footsteps to streamline the transfer process.
It may appear on Android 14
Reportedly, the new feature will be included in the SIM Manager app that comes with Google Mobile Services on Pixel and Android phones. The exact compatibility details of the fast transfer feature are currently unknown. However, android phones are expected to be limited to eSIM transfer only, while the Pixel series is expected to support both eSIM and converting a physical SIM to an eSIM profile.
It is unknown when Google will roll out the eSIM fast transfer feature. Rumors point to the March 2023 Pixel feature update or Android 14, which is expected to be introduced in 2023. We expect more information about the new feature to be shared in the coming weeks.
