Google recently announced that it would lay off about 12,000 employees, or 6 percent of the global workforce. This announcement was made last week by Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. The reason for the layoffs is shown as the company’s hiring too many people very quickly and the fact that some of them quit their jobs at this point, which has now become an “economic reality”.
Google in the process of restructuring
In this context, Google engineer Jeremy Joslin, who started working for the company in 2003, described his dismissal as “slapped” after seeing an email informing him of his dismissal. While Joslin describes her dismissal as unexpected, she says she never felt that her job was in danger during the process.
However, Joslin isn’t the only one who’s been fired abruptly. Dan Russell, a research scientist who spent 17.5 years at Google, and Elizabeth Hart, marketing manager, who has been with the company for 15 years, also say they were fired abruptly and unexpectedly.
Reports show that Google’s layoffs were by no means performance-based, and restructuring was at the root of the layoffs. Some ex-employees who were laid off say that Google sees people as disposable. On the other hand, Google announced that it is considering turning its focus to artificial intelligence and will focus on this area.
