Recently, Microsoft claimed that its own browser Edge is much more secure than Chrome. Now, Chrome has responded to this claim with performance data. But this time, he didn’t name his direct competitor, as Microsoft did, just highlight how fast his browser is.
In October, Google released Chrome 86 version and sent a new enhancement called occlusion to all Windows users. Now, Chromium has demonstrated the performance of this new feature by displaying the data it collects on the blog. Google Chrome is already a fast web browser, but with occlusion enabled, this performance gets even higher.
For several years now, Chrome has been reducing resource usage by lowering the priority of minimized background tabs and Chrome windows. However, what it didn’t do was lower the priority of background but active tabs in Chrome windows. The new feature also lowers the priority of these tabs hidden behind Windows programs.
Here are the performance data published by Google:
- 8.5% – 25.8% faster boot
- 3.1% reduction in GPU memory usage
- 20.4% decrease in the total number of drawn squares
- 4.5% reduction in crashes
- 3.0% acceleration on input lag
For Google, it is very important to improve the performance of Chrome. It currently dominates 66.35% of the browser market, but risks losing that market if it stays slow. Faster bootups and fewer crashes help Google stay at the top.
