Google has promised that Wear OS smartwatches will be updated as often as Android phones.Introducing the Pixel Watch smartwatch model recently, Google announced its update plans for Wear OS. According to Wear OS product management director Björn Kilburn, Google will offer updates to Wear OS smartwatches every year. Although it is said that Wear OS will receive frequent updates like Android, it is not clear whether these updates will be a major version or an intermediate version.
The latest Android features will be on smartwatches
With annual updates, the latest Android features are planned to be quickly incorporated into smartwatches. Kilburn said that the quarterly Wear updates will also bring new experiences. Smart watches running on Wear OS 3 will be updated via OTA, but the OEM may not offer the latest Wear OS update if the device’s last update time has passed.
Update to old watches is on the way
Google said that the Wear OS update for Wear OS 2 watches with Snapdragon Wear 4100 and 4100 Plus processors could arrive later this year. The device will need to be reset to install the new version.
