Introducing the ChromeOS operating system in the early 2010s, Google wanted computers to be able to be used comfortably without advanced hardware features. Introduced as the operating system of the future, ChromeOS has gained sufficient popularity, albeit slowly. Chromebooks, which are frequently preferred in the US education market especially after 2019, have grown with the support of different brands. Developing Pixelbook devices to steer ChromeOS computers in 2013, 2017 and 2019, Google clashed with ChromeOS principles with its powerful hardware usage and high price tag. While the Pixebook series is quite impressive, companies like Asus, HP, Acer and Samsung have moved the Chromebook market forward. Apparently, Google realized that it had nothing to teach these companies anymore and canceled the Pixelbook projects.
Pixel Tablet Pro and foldable Pixel on the way
Google will focus on Android tablets
According to the leaked information, Google canceled the next-generation Pixelbook project and disbanded the team responsible for development. It was stated that the project is almost complete and will be introduced in 2023. Apparently the canceled Pixebook would be powered by Google’s self-developed Tensor processor. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has stated that they plan to slow down hiring across the company and halt some projects. The Pixebook project was also canceled to devote time and money to high priority areas.
Having left the Android tablet market alone for years, Google stated in the past months that Android tablets are the computers of the future. The company is working on Pixel Tablet and Pixel Tablet Pro in this direction. Apparently, the company does not think that the ChromeOS operating system needs Google hardware and guidance anymore, but on the Android side, only Samsung can compete with the iPad. Desiring to reshape the Android tablet market, Google will direct its efforts to this market in the coming years. However, Google is not a company that is shy about reviving canceled projects. The company could reinvigorate the Pixelbook suite and reshape the ChromeOS market in the coming years.
