“We have an application that has been going on for a long time in applying the name changes updated in official state sources,” Google Maps said in a statement. It was said that the instruction of the change in question will be complied with and the name of the Gulf of Mexico would be changed to “Gulf of America” and the name of the Denali Mountain in Alaska “McKinley”.
The change will only appear to users in the USA
This name will appear only to US users. For users outside the USA, a different policy will be followed. For example, users in Mexico will continue to see the name “Mexico Gulf” on the map. Users in countries outside the USA and Mexico will see both names. In such cases, Google is implementing the policy of showing official local names as a priority.
At the beginning of this month, Trump announced that the Gulf of Mexico was the intention of changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico, and in his speech at the oath ceremony on January 20, he said he would make this change.
Trump also said that as a praise to former US President William McKinley, the name of Denali Mountain would change the name to McKinley Mountain. The name Denali, which was given to the mountain among the American natives in Alaska, was changed as a gesture by US President Barack Obama administration in 2015 as a gesture.
