Over the past few days, some Google Drive users have noticed that their files and data have disappeared. While users reported that data losses could cover a period of several years, Google recently published an official statement. The company stated that the problem was caused by the desktop application and that it was continuing its investigations.

Google is examining the Drive issue

To summarize the ongoing situation, Google Drive users suddenly noticed that their files that had been around for months or even years were missing. The problem, whose exact origin is unknown, eliminates the data in the cloud account. Google Drive is a service frequently used for professional and business purposes, and in this respect, data loss can be intolerable.

In a short post on the Community forums, Google officially acknowledged the missing files issue and confirmed that the issue was caused by Drive’s desktop app. Although the source of the problem is the application, the cause remains unclear. While there is no explanation for the error, Google says that the problem is experienced by a limited number of users and is related to the recently released versions 84.0.0.0 to 84.0.4.0. It is unknown when the correction will be made while the company’s investigations are ongoing. Likewise, it is currently unclear whether the lost data will be returned.

Google is also telling users not to disconnect their Google account from the desktop app and not to delete or move data in the “DriveFS” folder on their machine, located under AppDataLocalGoogleDriveFS on Windows and Library/Application Support/Google/DriveFS on macOS. However, Google recommends that you create a copy of this folder if there is enough space on the system.
