READING NOW Google imposes a new requirement on developers for Android applications

Google’s new developer policy aims to give Android users more control over apps that require account creation, by allowing them to delete their account data even if they haven’t installed the app.

Currently, developers need to declare to Google that account deletion is somehow possible, but starting next year, developers will need to make it easy to delete data both through apps and an online portal.

Google states it this way: “For apps that enable app account creation, developers will soon need to provide an option to initiate account and data deletion from within the app and online.”

This explanation means that any app that lets you create an account to use it should allow you to delete that information when you’re done. While you can currently request deletion of your data, you usually have to manually contact the developer for this. This new policy means that developers must offer Android users a “kill switch” from the get-go. Thus, Google aims to make the platform more secure.
