Google tracked Android users even when location services were turned off
In May 2020, the State of Arizona sued Google for violating its personal data privacy. The state’s attorney general, Mark Brnovich, stated that even if Android users’ location services are turned off, Google tracks users’ location through search, maps, weather and other applications. The lawsuit, demanding a penalty of $10,000 per data breach, was concluded, and Google was fined $85 million by the State of Arizona.
While the $85 million fine may seem insignificant for the firm, since Google received close to $69 billion in revenue per quarter, this case was the firm’s most penalized per data breach. Following the conclusion of the lawsuit, Google spokesperson José Castañeda stated that the data breach was related to their old services and products and they will continue to provide useful products for users.
