READING NOW Google expands distance education studies!

Our lives have changed drastically, especially with the pandemic. While most people started to work from home, distance education programs for children started to come to life again. During this period, Google also released an educational and entertaining application for children aged 5 and above with the Read Along application.

Read Along contains stories at different reading levels

Now, Google is expanding the scope of its Read Along education app. Introducing the browser version of the Read Along application, the company introduced a new method for children’s education. The website, which is still in beta, is currently active.

The site contains hundreds of illustrated stories at several different reading levels. After children choose a story, they begin to read the story. The application, which listens to the child reading the story, highlights the correctly read words in blue and underlines the wrongly pronounced words in red. When you click on the underlined word, the virtual assistant Diya shares the correct pronunciation of the word with the child.

The stories are available in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Telugu, Marathice, Tamil, Spanish and Portuguese. Google has also added new stories to Read Along’s collection, which will be available in both browser and Android versions later this year. These include adaptations of children’s video creators USP Studios and ChuChu TV content, and alphabet and phonetics books by education company Kutuki.

Read Along’s Android app has reached over 30 million children since its launch in 2019. The move to the Internet browser will not only give kids more device options, but it will also enable many to read on larger screens. It is stated that the big screen is very important especially for young students with visual impairment.

Google Read Along is currently supported by Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Safari and other internet browsers are also expected to be supported in the near future. So what do you think about Google and the Read Along education app? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
