Google first introduced the Chrome memory saving feature in December 2022. This mode frees up memory by putting tabs that are not used for a certain period of time on hold, and provides a smoother browsing experience as priority is given to the open tab. The new probabilistic memory saver mode is based on existing technology. The web browser estimates the user’s likelihood of reopening tabs based on observations of the tab’s state.

New, improved memory saving mode is coming

The new mode will allow Chrome to save system memory by keeping tabs that are likely to be revisited and discarding tabs that are unlikely to be opened. The new probabilistic mode is available in Chrome Canary version 121 and can be enabled by typing “chrome://flags/probabilistic-memory-saver” in the address line.

According to Google data, users revisit tabs placed on hold to save memory 60% of the time within 24 hours. With this information, the company developed probabilistic mode that can help Chrome predict which open tabs are safe to close to save memory.
