US-based technology giant Google has announced a critical new feature for the popular email service Gmail. In the statement on the company’s official blog page, it was stated that a new system capable of end-to-end encryption was integrated into Gmail. The end-to-end encryption feature, which is still in beta, will be available to all users in the coming periods.

Gmail’s end-to-end encryption feature will be especially important for businesses. Because institutions and organizations will have an extra layer of security after they start using this feature. Initially, Google will not be able to access sensitive information and data in emails. The e-mail content will be fully encrypted.

End-to-end encryption to be used optionally!

Google’s end-to-end encryption feature for Gmail will be used as an optional feature. When end-to-end encryption is enabled, some features such as emojis, signatures and Smart Typing will be disabled. In a statement made by a Google spokesperson named Ross Richendrfer, it was underlined that end-to-end encryption is really important.

According to the statement made by Google, those who want to be included in the beta process of Gmail’s end-to-end encryption feature should fill out a form* provided by Google’s support center. In addition, to benefit from this service, one of Google Workspace’s Enterprise Plus, Education Standard or Education Plus packages must be purchased.

Why is end-to-end encryption important?

End-to-end encryption systems, which are becoming more common day by day, ensure that a message between two parties can only be seen by those two parties. For example, a company such as Google or WhatsApp, which works as an intermediary in sending this message, becomes unable to see the content of the message. Thus, the data that is requested to remain confidential can only be seen by the receiver and sender. It also provides additional security against hackers. In end-to-end encryption, if the person who receives or sends the encrypted message is not hacked directly, it is not possible to access the data.

As it is known, iCloud accounts of many famous names have been added in recent years and inappropriate images of these people have spread all over the internet. This showed how important security measures such as end-to-end encryption systems are for data leaks. Apple has also recently announced that it will take a step in this regard and bring end-to-end encryption to iCloud backups and all data.
