Google is testing a search engine that works without WebKit on iOS
Apple’s App Store rules state that browser apps on iOS and iPadOS must use their own WebKit browser engine. This means that while browsers like Chrome and Microsoft Edge are built with Chromium on macOS and Windows, their iOS counterparts are forced to use Apple’s WebKit and should behave similarly to Safari.
However, according to a new report by The Register, Google’s Chromium developers are testing the Blink search engine without using WebKit, in violation of App Store rules. Making a statement on this subject, Google said that the application is an experimental prototype only to understand certain aspects of its performance on iOS, cannot be used by users and will continue to comply with Apple’s policies.
