Security updates will be delivered faster to desktop and mobile users starting with Chrome 116. Since Chromium is an open source project, its source code is publicly available. This allows malicious people to see the bugs fixed and security vulnerabilities fixed in the beta version and take action accordingly. Google will further shorten the patch gap from beta to final release, preventing bad actors from taking advantage of it.
Google says that the new weekly updates will not change the way Chrome is used, and that milestone versions will be delivered at the same time. In Chrome 77 and older, the patch gap was approximately 35 days and was reduced to approximately 15 days with the implementation of the biweekly patch cycle. Now, that gap has fallen even further. This will allow users to receive patches that close large vulnerabilities faster.
