Internet giant Google has announced a new programming language called Carbon, positioned as the successor to C++. The company shared very important details about the Carbon vision at the Cpp North developer event held in Toronto.

Googlers work on Carbon, including developer Chandler Carruth. It is not yet known at what stage of development it is, but Google has proven time and time again that it can popularize it by creating a full-fledged programming language.

Chandler Carruth describes Carbon as a successor to C++, not a replacement. Such examples exist today. For example, Kotlin is considered the successor of Java. Likewise, Swift, which is used on the iOS platform, is the successor of Objective-C.

Fully compatible with C++ code

According to the developers’ statements, the most important thing Carbon will borrow from C++ is its performance. They also emphasize that they managed to eliminate all the existing shortcomings of C++. The code for the Carbon programming language is very similar to C++ code, almost identical in many respects.

Developers will be able to integrate Carbon code into C++ code, which is fully compatible with existing C++ code, if they wish. For C++ programmers who want to switch completely to Carbon, they will use a toolset that will automatically translate their C++ library into code in Google’s new language.

Although Carbon was revealed by Google, the company believes it should be “an independent project run by the community.” The new programming language, which is in the experimental stage, has already attracted the attention of many companies. All the Carbon tools and source code that developers may need are available on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license.
