World governments have recognized the enormous destructive potential of productive AI and are acting accordingly. According to Reuters, European Commission industry chief Thierry Breton said in a statement that they will work on a voluntary agreement with Alphabet (Google’s parent company) to establish artificial intelligence ground rules.

Artificial intelligence collaboration from Google and EU

Breton met with Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai in Brussels to discuss the arrangement, which would include contributions from companies in Europe and elsewhere. “Sundar and I have agreed that we cannot afford to wait for AI regulation to become truly enforceable and that we must work with all AI developers to voluntarily develop an AI agreement before the legal deadline,” Breton said in a statement.

Currently, EU countries and the European Commission are negotiating full details of the targeted Artificial Intelligence Law. Both groups have not yet started negotiations to resolve their differences. However, it is believed that working with Google and other actors will shorten the process of finding the right path. The parties think that the joint text will be agreed before the end of 2023. Issues of concern to the EU include copyright, disinformation, transparency and governance.

Meanwhile, EU Commission Member for Competition Margrethe Vestager also met with Pichai and underlined the need to act together. Vestager said a while ago that the European Union and the USA are planning to increase cooperation on artificial intelligence to set minimum standards before the legislation comes into force.
