Epic Games Store’s 2021 Year In Review update was presented yesterday as the company gave details about user engagement, increased revenue, and published features. Also, upcoming features for the platform were mentioned and there was an update on the free games that the store has been giving out continuously for a while.
Epic Games Store has been giving away free games for two years. The company confirmed in a statement that this routine will continue in 2022. Daemon X Machina has been announced as the new free game, and it has been announced that Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible will be released next week.
According to the numbers shared by Epic Games, more than 194 million users became a part of the platform by the end of 2021, with an increase of 34 million since 2020. During the year, the number of daily active users reached 31.1 million and the highest concurrent number was 13.2 million.
Gamers spent around $840 million on the PC game store during 2021, up 20% from 2020. Among them, third-party games saw a 12% increase, reaching over $300 million. Impressive figures were also seen in year-end sales, and more than 31 million people who participated in the campaign purchased a total of 159 million products (14% increase compared to 2020 sales).
Predictably, the vast majority of free games distributed in the store (76 out of 89) had also broken concurrent user records on PC after the promotions. An impressive 765 million free games were downloaded by players in 2021.
With achievements and much-requested features like the shopping cart launching in 2021, Epic seems to have already picked up some good momentum. In 2022, they also plan to refresh the launcher for better control over downloads and filters, implement player profiles to track achievements and playtimes, game hubs, add more regions powered by Epic Wallet, and more.
