The popular social media platform Twitter has discovered a new vulnerability that affects users. The new breach, verified by the company, allows hackers to easily access account information. The new vulnerability allows hackers to find accounts associated with an email address or phone number.
Phone and emails associated with Twitter accounts surfaced
A report shared by the social media giant last week has revealed a new security leak exploited by hackers. It was stated that the security breach was caused by an update applied in June of last year. The breach was not discovered until January 2022.
While Twitter has confirmed that user data has been breached, it did not mention how many users were affected. According to security researchers’ claim, hackers created a database of at least 5.4 million users and sold it for $300,000.
The latest breach on Twitter revealed which account the email or phone numbers were paired with. This led to the disclosure of thousands of secret Twitter accounts, as well as information such as phone numbers.
“As a result of the vulnerability, if someone sends an email address or phone number to Twitter systems, Twitter systems will show which Twitter account the email address or phone number sent to the person is associated with,” the company said in a statement.
The social media giant said accounts whose data were exposed would be notified, but it’s unclear how many people were potentially affected. The company suggests enabling two-factor authentication and adding a second email address or phone number.
