It was revealed last week that Samsung’s GOS (Game Optimization Service) was artificially slowing down apps. The service was throttling both CPU and GPU performance for over 10,000 apps, including even TikTok and Instagram.

What was remarkable, however, was that GOS did not slow down performance measurement applications. Popular smartphone testing service Geekbench has also announced that it has removed certain Samsung phones from its list due to this app restriction.

To briefly explain why… GOS slows down GPU and CPU performance on Samsung smartphones for games and applications. Despite running powerful hardware, these devices thus prevent users from getting the best performance out of them. Benchmark applications such as 3D Mark and Geekbench are not affected by this slowdown. So when the user does a benchmark, it allows the CPU and GPU to run at peak performance, causing a difference between actual usage and benchmarking.

Geekbench has confirmed that it will remove the new Galaxy S22 series from the Geekbench Browser, in addition to the entire Galaxy S10, Galaxy S20, and S21 series. Galaxy Note and A series were not removed as they were not affected by GOS.

In a statement, Geekbench said, “GOS decides to throttle (or not to throttle) applications using application descriptors, not application behavior. Since the main benchmark applications, including Geekbench, are not constrained by this service, we consider it a form of benchmark manipulation. ” said.

Samsung defends itself by saying its GOS is used to prevent its devices from overheating, but this defense doesn’t seem to have worked. So it has confirmed that a software update will be released in the future to add a Performance Priority button. Thanks to this option, users will be able to make their own choices about performance.
