Canadian scientists have signed a groundbreaking method in the fight against loss of vision. The procedure, known as the “eye tooth”, offers a new light of hope to people with serious corneal blindness.

The operation at the Mount Saint Joseph Hospital in Vancouver expresses much more than an ordinary medical intervention: it can be easily said that it is both creative and unusual. This method, whose first stage was successfully completed, was tried on three patients.

Cornea blindness emerges when the cornea layer in front of the eye loses its transparency and destroys its ability to see. However, “eye tooth” surgery aims to correct this situation in two stages. In the first step of the process, the patient’s damaged cornea and wound tissues are removed. Instead, a special tissue taken from the patient’s cheek is placed. Meanwhile, perhaps the most remarkable part of the operation begins: implant is being created.

In order to place an optical lens by taking a female of the patient, a hole is drilled in the middle and this tooth is kept on the patient’s cheek for about three months. During this time, tissues develop, blood flow is achieved and implant becomes usable. Then, the surgeons bring this implant together. Three patients in Canada will undergo their second operations during the year and reach the last step of this innovative method. On the other hand, this extraordinary procedure is not new.
