eTrex Solar combines a 2.2-inch monochrome display with an integrated solar panel. Charging occurs automatically when daylight is brighter than 75,000 lux. The device can work for approximately 8 days when set to fast GPS updates, and 75 days in slow mode without charging. The device can receive multi-band GPS signals for best coverage and accuracy. A digital compass also makes it easier to find your way when using paper maps or landmarks.

When connected to a smartphone, it is possible to receive weather updates, plan a walk, receive notifications, and receive wireless software updates via the Garmin Explore application. Being IPX7 certified, it is resistant to rain.
