There have been many rumors over the years that Samsung will use stainless steel frames for its flagship smartphones, but these rumors never materialized. The aluminum frame on Samsung’s flagship phones makes them the most durable devices on the market, but Apple has a slight advantage in how premium a phone can feel, thanks to the stainless steel frame on iPhones it’s released over the past few years.
However, stainless steel does make a device heavier, which may be the reason why Samsung never used this steel in its smartphones. It looks like the Korean giant is now planning to go straight to the titanium frame. According to a cryptic tweet by Ice universe, Samsung’s Galaxy S24 lineup will opt to use titanium for the bezel.
If true, this means that both Apple and Samsung will use titanium frames in their next flagship smartphones. Yes, it is said that Apple will use titanium in some iPhone 15 models (Pro and Pro Max) that will be released later this year, and it seems that Samsung does not want to be left behind this time.
As we mentioned above, stainless steel is stronger but heavier than aluminum, making titanium an excellent alternative. Titanium is also heavier than aluminum, but its superior power-to-weight ratio balances things out. Unfortunately, titanium is about 10 times more expensive than aluminum, so Samsung can only use it in the frame of the Galaxy S24 Ultra to keep prices low.
Of course, it’s also possible that this is just a rumor and Samsung will follow a different path in its new flagship, sticking to the Armored Aluminum design for the entire Galaxy S24 series. It’s still a little early for us to consider the leaked Galaxy S24 details too much, but we’ll see how the pieces of the puzzle fall into place in the coming months.
