Highways are not yet safe enough for fully autonomous vehicles. Volvo has announced that it will add its new autonomous driving technology to its new SUV model after it has proven safe for use on highways. The company will test its new technology in 2022.

Mats Moberg, head of research and development at Volvo Cars, said: “As we strive to set a new industry standard for autonomy without sacrificing safety, we are proud to announce the planned launch in the US of our first truly unsupervised autonomous driving feature. Having Zenseact’s brand new autonomous driving software and Luminar’s LiDAR standard in our new electric vehicle is changing the game for automotive safety and autonomous driving as well as for Volvo Cars. ” said.

Ride Pilot, which uses Iris LiDAR sensors produced by Luminar, will provide safe service to users with the developed autonomous driving system. The company used 8 cameras, 5 radar sensors and 16 ultrasonic sensors to maximize driving safety in the new model.

The automaker announced that it has selected California as the first location to make Ride Pilot available due to favorable weather and regulatory conditions. However, he underlined that he plans to expand it to more and more places around the world.

Like other driver assistance systems, Ride Pilot will be available as an additional subscription. The new technology will first be presented in Volvo’s flagship electric SUV, which is scheduled to debut later this year.
