Sony is not keeping quiet about Microsoft’s acquisition of studios like Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. The PlayStation maker has attracted attention with the recent inclusion of many different studios in the PlayStation Studios team. Sony recently acquired Bungie, the studio behind the Destiny and Halo series.
Sony buys Destiny developer Bungie for $3.6 billion
PlayStation Studios, which acquired Housemarque and Uncharted studio Bluepoint last year, continues to grow its game team. With the official statement from Sony, it has been confirmed that Bungie, the developer of the Destiny series, was bought for $ 3.6 billion.
Founded in 1991 in the USA, game studio Bungie is especially known for developing the legendary Xbox game Halo series. Halo games developed by Bungie include Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo: Reach. But the company’s best-known games are undoubtedly Destiny and Destiny 2.
It’s unclear whether the studio is actively working on a new game. However, Destiny 2 has long been popular in the online gaming industry and has been receiving content updates for years. Therefore, many are wondering what Bungie and PlayStation Studios will do next.
Previously, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan stated that they want to develop more than 10 new online games by March 2026. So the Destiny series will be a critical part of PlayStation’s future.
Taking more strategic steps against Microsoft’s huge acquisitions, PlayStation Studios continues to grow day by day. The interesting thing is that every studio it bought has released games for different platforms. It is not known whether Bungie’s games will be exclusive to PlayStation from now on.
